Design Beyond Our Devicesd
In this age of device diversity, we’ve been focusing less on pages, and more on _patterns_: reusable bits of design and content we stitch together into responsive design systems. But those patterns bring puzzles: how should they adapt, and why? And how do we, well, _design_ with them? Let’s look at a few answers to those questions, and start moving our design practices beyond the screens in front of us.

adaptive content, Context, andControversy
In 2016, adaptive content has become a buzzword. To some, it’s a complex, long-term initiative to structure content for flexible reuse and dynamic targeting. To others, it’s a way to ensure that everyone, everywhere, sees exactly what they want—like magic! In this talk, Karen shares her perspective (and reservations) on how adaptive content is being used today. She’ll discuss how adaptive content supports targeting content to device type—and why that’s rarely necessary. She’ll also describe ways that adaptive content can support tailoring content according to context—and ways that can go wrong. You’ll walk away with a better understanding of when adaptive content is necessary and how to get the most value from it.

Front End Style Guides
After interviewing a dozen people with [[[Brad Frost]]] for their podcast on [[[Style Guides]]] for the web, [[[Anna]]] has collated all their findings for this talk on the different kinds that are out there, how they're built, what works (and what doesn't), and what makes them such a useful tool.
She'll give you a tour of some style guides built by companies with a range of different needs and requirements, and you'll learn how to build your own using a range of possible technologies.
Most importantly, she'll show you how to make sure they don't get forgotten at the end of the project, and ways that it can be kept up to date as living documentation well after a site has gone live.

Beyond Responsive
Responsive web design has taken our industry by storm and with good reason: it helps us improve our reach with less effort. But incorporating responsive design is not the goal, meeting our users’ needs is. Responsive design is not an end in itself… it’s just the beginning.
We need to embrace the heterogenous nature of the Web—myriad web-enabled devices with vastly different dimensions, screen sizes, networks, and capabilities in use by countless individuals, each with their own special needs—and craft experiences that will work anywhere at any time. We need to build robust systems that adapt in ways far beyond aesthetics.
Aaron will discuss a number of considerations that we should be aware of—beyond screen size and pixel density—and provide examples of how to adapt our interfaces so they rise to meet our customers’ needs. This session will push you to think more about accessibility, alternate interaction methods, slow networks, and the future of the the Web.

Product Design for Tomorrow
The user experience design discipline is stagnating at a dangerous time. Its core mindsets, methods, and tools have been successful over the last decade, but are becoming poorly suited to the challenges of 2015 and beyond. As diversity – of users, of inputs, of contexts – becomes the dominant force in technology, designers need a more flexible toolkit. Contemporary digital product design demands a mastery of timing and motion, a deep knowledge of modern prototyping tools, and a fluidity of process that allows you to tailor your approach for the task at hand. Let’s talk about the next ten years of our field.
